Contemporary

Level 3+

Come Ready to Dance!

Contemporary combines technical dance training with fluid movement, musicality, expression, and individuality. Dancers explore movement both on their feet and on the floor, developing strength, control, creativity, and emotional connection to their dancing.

  • Strength, flexibility, and body awareness
  • Floor work, transitions, and weight shifts
  • Musicality and expressive movement
  • Choreography and improvisation
  • Individual artistry and creative expression

Dress Code

Contemporary attire is similar to our Jazz dress code, with one important difference: Contemporary is danced barefoot.

Form-fitting clothing is encouraged so instructors can see alignment and movement. However, because Contemporary choreography often includes demanding floor work, dancers may layer baggy pants, long-sleeve tops, or other soft layers over their base attire.

These layers are intentional and serve as protection for the body. Bare skin can become easily scraped, bruised, or irritated during repeated floor work.

Girls & Boys

  • Bare feet — no shoes
  • Socks permitted for Level 4+
  • Form-fitting base layer recommended
  • Fitted shorts or pants are appropriate
  • Soft, loose-fitting pants or long sleeves may be layered for floor work
  • Hair secured away from the face
  • No clothing with zippers, hard embellishments, or other elements that may interfere with floor work

Warm-Ups

Warm-up layers may be worn as needed during class, particularly when dancers are preparing for floor work. Instructors may ask dancers to adjust or remove layers when they need to clearly see technique and alignment.
